The formula
Bundles = round up (roof area × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per bundle). We round up because partial bundles are not sold. We do not assume "three bundles per square", because product coverage varies.
Not included: underlayment, ice barrier, drip edge, flashing, vents, nails and any deck replacement.
How to use this tool

- Choose a waste allowance: more for hips, valleys and dormers, less for a simple gable.
- Order the bundle count shown, plus starter and ridge cap from the manufacturer’s own charts.
Ordering shingles for our winters
Ohio and Michigan codes call for ice barrier along the eaves in most cases, so add ice-and-water membrane to your order along with starter and ridge. Cold shingles are stiff and break easily; many manufacturers set minimum installation temperatures and special nailing or sealing steps in cold weather.

Frequently asked questions
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
It depends on the product. Many architectural shingles are packed three bundles to a square, but not all are. That is why the calculator asks for the coverage printed on the bundle wrapper instead of assuming it.
Why round up to a whole bundle?
Suppliers sell whole bundles, and running short mid-job means a return trip and possible color-lot differences. The calculator shows the exact figure and the rounded-up order.
Does this include starter strips and ridge caps?
Only if you enter those lengths and their label coverage. Field shingles, starter and ridge cap are counted separately because they come in different packages.
Is the bundle count a price?
No. It is a material quantity. Labor, underlayment, flashing, deck repair, disposal and permits are not included.
