Lake Erie wind and freeze-thaw

Shoreline communities such as Oregon, Port Clinton, Sandusky and Huron take stronger wind off the lake, so shingle wind ratings, nailing patterns and starter strips matter. Everywhere in the region, repeated freeze-thaw cycles work on flashing, chimneys and gutters every winter.

Flat land and heavy clay soil

Much of northwest Ohio sits on the flat, poorly drained ground of the former Great Black Swamp. Water that leaves a gutter needs somewhere to go: downspout extensions and grading keep roof water away from foundations.
